My Decision Was Easy

I had an excellent phone conversation with an agent who answered all of my questions, making the decision much easier. I also appreciate the small discount for military veterans. Thank you.

Very User-Friendly

Very user-friendly to sign up. I appreciate that. I appreciate the three discounts, being a Southwest Airlines employee and a retired U.S. Air Force veteran. Thank you so much.

Pets play a significant role in our lives, so providing the care they need is important. The average annual cost for health-related expenses can range from about $500 to $1,200 for a dog and $400 to $1,000 for a cat.14  Pet insurance can help you save on these costs.

Choosing the right federal employee pet insurance depends on your pet’s needs, your budget, and the type of coverage you prefer. Here’s what to consider:

Coverage and Exclusions

  • Review what’s covered under each plan, including accidents, illnesses, and hereditary conditions.
  • Understand exclusions like pre-existing conditions, cosmetic procedures, and breeding-related costs.
  • See full coverage and exclusions

Standard Plan vs. Preventive Care Add-On

  • Standard Plan: Covers unexpected vet visits, surgeries, and treatments.
  • Preventive Care Add-On: Includes routine care like vaccinations, dental cleanings, and wellness exams.

Options for Multiple Pets

  • Family Plan: One premium covers 2–3 pets. The policy limit applies to the group, not each pet individually.
  • Multi-Pet Policy: Each pet has its own premium, deductible, and policy limit. Discounts may apply for multiple enrollments.

Reimbursement for covered fees you incur for treatment of, including but not limited to the following:

  • Injuries
  • Illnesses
  • Exam fees
  • Surgeries and hospital stays
  • Medications
  • X-rays, ultrasounds, and diagnostic tests
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions
  • Chronic conditions
  • Holistic care and alternative therapies

You also add Optional Preventive Care for extra wellness coverage for regular care.

For more details on what can be covered and what isn’t covered, view Coverages & Exclusions or this sample MetLife Pet Insurance policy document.  Please note that this is only a sample policy and that state variations might be applicable.

We believe that every individual and their pet have unique needs. That’s why we allow you to customize your accident & illness plan. You can choose what works best for you for each of the following:

Reimbursement Percentage:  the percentage of your vet bill reimbursed by MetLife Pet

  • Options:  50%, 70%, 80% or 90%2
  • Premium may increase with a selection of a higher reimbursement percentage for the policy.

Annual Benefit:  the maximum dollar amount you can be reimbursed per policy year

  • Options: $500 - unlimited15
  • Lower annual benefit limits typically lower your monthly premium.

Deductible: the amount you must pay before MetLife Pet will pay a claim

  • Options: $0 – $250016
  • A Higher deductible amount selected for your policy will typically lower monthly premium.

  1. Take your pet to any licensed veterinarian or emergency clinic in the U.S. and pay your bill.
  2. Send us your claim using our mobile app or online portal, email, fax, or mail.
  3. If your claim expense is covered by your policy, we’ll reimburse you either by check, direct deposit or quick-pay options like Zelle® and Apple Pay® .17 Most claims are processed within 5-10 days.18

Our waiting period is among the shortest for accident and illness coverage.12 Accident coverage and wellness coverage, if selected as an additional plan option, begin on the effective date of your policy. Illness coverage begins 14 days later.

Your premium depends on the age, breed, and location of your pet, the coverage amount you select, and the amount of any discounts for which you might be eligible.

Your deductible will automatically decrease by $50 each policy year if you have no claim reimbursements within a policy year.11
